Reeve's new translation of the Nicomachean Ethics is most succinctly characterized as applying Trendelenburg's dictum to this work with a relentless consistency. German philologist and idealist philosopher, insisted that the best and safest way to interpret a text of Aristotle's was to rely on other texts attributed to him: " Aristoteles ex Aristotele" was his dictum, and this approach to studying the Metaphysics was explicitly endorsed and employed by Joseph Owens in his influential The Doctrine of Being in the Aristotelian Metaphysics.
